The Senate passed four local bills Monday, all of which emerged from the Ways and Means Committee with new texts. Those measures affect the designation of city landmarks by the Boston Landmarks Commission, the transliteration of names into Chinese characters on bilingual ballots in Malden, the Paul Revere Heritage Site in Canton, and a 25 mph speed limit at the intersection of Route 28 and Chickatawbut Road in Milton. The Senate also sent two papers down the hall for Gov. Charlie Baker’s consideration dealing with a gender-neutral name change for the selectmen of the western Massachusetts town of Goshen and with non-binding resolutions at Saugus town meetings. CONVENES: The Senate convened at 11:12 a.m. with Sen. Brownsberger of Belmont presiding. Sen. Tarr of Gloucester was also present.

PLEDGE: Members, staff, and guests pledged allegiance to the U.S. Flag.

RESOLUTIONS: The Senate adopted resolutions by Sen. Crighton relative to an observance of Oct. 23 as Aromatic L-Amino Acid Decarboxylase Deficiency Awareness Day.

BOSTON LANDMARKS: The Senate adopted a Ways and Means amendment inserting a new text (S 3121) in H 4565 relative to the Boston Landmarks Commission. The Senate then ordered the bill to a third reading as amended, and engrossed it.

MALDEN BALLOTS: The Senate adopted a Ways and Means amendment inserting a new text (S 3122) in H 4793 relative to the preparation of certain bilingual ballots in the city of Malden. The Senate then ordered the bill to a third reading as amended, and engrossed it.

CANTON – PAUL REVERE HERITAGE SITE: The Senate adopted a Ways and Means amendment inserting a new text (S 3123) in H 5054 relative to Revere and Son Heritage Trust Corporation. The Senate then ordered the bill to a third reading as amended. Question came on engrossment. After a brief recess, the bill was temporarily laid aside.

GOSHEN SELECTMEN NAME-CHANGE: The Senate ENACTED S 2513 relative to the select board of the town of Goshen.

SAUGUS TOWN MEETING: The Senate ENACTED H 5067 to allow Saugus town meeting to adopt a process to allow non-binding resolutions.

The Senate stood in a brief recess. Sen. Timilty of Milton entered the chamber at 11:22 a.m.

CANTON – PAUL REVERE HERITAGE SITE: The Senate engrossed H 5054 relative to Revere and Son Heritage Trust Corporation.

MILTON – RTE. 28 SPEED LIMIT: The Senate adopted a Ways and Means amendment substituting a new draft (S 3124) for S 2384 establishing speed limits on portions of Route 28 and Chickatawbut Road in the town of Milton. The Senate then ordered the bill to a third reading as amended, and engrossed it.

TIME OF MEETING: The Senate adopted an order scheduling its next session for 11 a.m. Thursday.

ADJOURNS ‘TIL THURSDAY: The Senate adjourned at 11:25 a.m. to meet next on Thursday at 11 a.m. without a calendar.

  1. Texas, which has a population and economy larger than many nations, gets its state legislative business done in less than 6 months on average. Here we have the self serving, agenda based clowns acting very important. Yet, we still have some of the poorest quality roads, most scandal ridden state police and poorest rated children services in the nation.
