John Deaton Endorsed by Log Cabin Republicans

WOBURN, MA – U.S. Senate Candidate John Deaton today announced an endorsement of his candidacy by the Log Cabin Republicans, the oldest LGBT arm of the Republican Party. For 40 years, the LCR has been dedicated to establishing inclusivity under the big tent of the GOP, a cause which Deaton has pledged to fight for in the U.S. Senate.

“It’s a great honor for me to accept this endorsement by the Log Cabin Republicans. On the campaign trail, I have been vocal about my support for marriage equality going back decades when leading figures in the Democratic Party were still promoting civil unions, not gay marriage,” said Deaton. “As we have seen in recent court decisions, civil protections must be enshrined into federal law, not secured by jurisprudence, and the U.S. Senate has a responsibility to act here. Unlike my opponent, I will not wait for another right to be taken away before taking action.”

“Log Cabin Republicans is thrilled to endorse John Deaton based on his proven track record of speaking up for fellow Republicans who believe equality is a worthy and conservative cause for our party. With his leadership in the U.S. Senate, Republicans are poised to carry the torch on passing critical equality legislation in the next Congress. We wholeheartedly support his candidacy,” said LCR President Charles T. Moran.

About the Log Cabin Republicans:

The Log Cabin Republicans got its start in 1970s California when former Governor Ronald Reagan, on the eve of announcing his presidential bid, publicly opposed a state ballot question to prevent gay and lesbian Californians from teaching in public schools. With Reagan’s support, the nascent Log Cabin movement defeated the ballot question and through the 1990s grew its ranks with state-level Republican leaders like Governor Bill Weld from Massachusetts, Governor George Pataki from New York, Governor Christine Todd Whitman from New Jersey, New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan. Under the presidency of George W. Bush, LCR was vital to the administration’s push to fund a $2 billion campaign to tackle the global AIDS pandemic.

Since then, LCR has opposed campaigns to constitutionalize same-sex marriage bans, supported the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, and supported introductions of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act through the Supreme Court’s 2020 decision enshrining employment protections for LGBT individuals. Today, LCR advocates for passage of the Fairness for All Act and the working on the Recover Pride in Service Act.
